Birth Control

There are many different types and methods of birth control and the best one depends on many factors including your age and general health as well as your pregnancy goals. Make sure you discuss with your provider your concerns and questions related to birth control and contraception.

Infertility

Infertility can take many forms. If you have not been able to get pregnant naturally in 6-12 months of unprotected intercourse, you should consider a workup and evaluation. The workup for infertility starts with a good review of your health and medical history and then a series of testing and evaluations that are generally easy to do. Sometimes a problem is easily identified and treated early in the workup. However, sometimes it can be a lengthy process and frustrating for the patient and physician. Our staff goes out of their way to help you through this period of questions and unknown answers and toward the path of successful pregnancy.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections

Many STDs go undiagnosed in asymptomatic patients however it is important to get tested if you have any concerns or high risk situations as early detection and treatment can prevent other problems from developing. Most patient do not understand that some STDs can cause occlusion of the fallopian tubes and problems with infertility. Additionally some asymptomatic patients who have an STD can spread the infection to partners without knowing it.

Menopausal Symptoms

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life where her menstrual cycle has ceased for at least twelve consecutive months. At any time before, during or after Menopause, women may experience disturbing physical, mental, and emotional changes such as hot flashes, night sweats, decreased libido, forgetfulness, mood changes, dry skin, urinary incontinence, or even sleeplessness.  There are many natural approaches to treatment, namely the use of Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. After completing a thorough questionnaire, a specific regimen can be uniquely designed to decrease and possibly eliminate the discomforts of Menopause.

Hormone Therapy

Pellet therapy is a sustained delivery method for bioidentical hormone therapy. Every three to six months a pellet made of bioidentical hormones is inserted just under the patient’s skin usually on the upper part of the buttocks. The pellet, which contain customized levels of estradiol or testosterone, react to the needs of the body, so they actually dissolve releasing the bioidentical hormones as needed.

Obstetrical Ultrasound

In our office you will usually get several indicated ultrasounds by our board certified ultrasound technician, Judy Pettus, including one around 8-10 weeks gestation to confirm pregnancy and establish accurate dates.  The 2nd ultrasound is done around 18-20 weeks to screen for normal growth and anatomy. Other ultrasounds are done depending on the clinical condition.

We also encourage you to consider 3D/4D ultrasound for your own enjoyment and to share with family and friends.

3D/4D Entertainment Ultrasound

The first glimpse of your baby is something you will remember forever. We are proud to offer the latest ultrasound technology, providing amazingly clear 3D/4D images of the most important subject of all, your baby!  This ultrasound is for entertainment and thus not covered by insurance. In order to capture the best images of your baby, it is recommended to have the 3D/4D ultrasound between 24 and 26 weeks.

IUD Insertion

An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small t-shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The device is placed by your ob/gyn during a routine gyn visit. Once in place, it provides continuous, highly effective birth control. Fewer than 1 in 100 women using an IUD will become pregnant. Once a woman is ready to become pregnant, an appointment with the doctor is made to remove the device. Our office carries various IUDs. Patients may discuss with their provider which device is right for them. We offer Skylar, Mirena and Paraguard IUDs.

Nexplanon

Nexplanon is used to prevent pregnancy. Nexplanon is a thin plastic rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin. The rod releases etonogestrel slowly into the body over a 3 year period. After 3 years, the rod must be removed and replaced if continued birth control is desired. The rod may be removed at any time by your provider if birth control is no longer desired. It does not contain any estrogen.

Myomectomy

Myomectomy is the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus. It allows the uterus to be left in place and, for some women, makes pregnancy more likely than before. Myomectomy is the preferred fibroid treatment for women who want to become pregnant. After myomectomy, your chances of becoming pregnant may be improved but are not guaranteed.

Endometrial Ablation

Endometrial ablation is used to treat many causes of heavy bleeding.  Heavy periods can be lifestyle altering and can have serious health consequences.   This procedure destroys a thin layer of the lining of the uterus and stops the menstrual flow in many women. For some women, menstrual bleeding does not stop but is reduced to normal or lighter levels.
We offer Novasure and Hydrotherm ablations.
